Among the treasured artifacts preserved at Canaveral National Seashore is a historic brass bell with a story that spans more than a century. Originally believed to have been used at the Eldora Schoolhouse as early as 1882, the bell was donated to Canaveral National Seashore in 1981 by Anita Backe-Mandarino, helping ensure that this important piece of local history would be preserved for future generations.
The initials "J.G.P." peened into the bell's uppermost collar, a small but intriguing detail that hints at its long and storied past.
In 2006, the bell underwent a careful restoration. Today, it stands as a tangible connection to the families, educators, and students who once called Eldora home, reminding us of the rich cultural heritage that remains an important part of Canaveral National Seashore's story.
